New Digital Pathway Connects HSE Therapy Services Directly to National Physical Activity Programme, Advancing Sláintecare’s Integrated Care Model
DUBLIN, 5th August 2026: A new digital referral pathway now enables HSE clinicians, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and dietitians, to refer patients directly from clinical care into Get Active, the HSE’s free 10-week physical activity programme.
Launched today, the pathway connects Salaso’s digital therapy platform, used by Health and Social Care Professionals (HSCPs) across HSE acute and community services, with the Get Active programme which is delivered through the HSE Health App. It means a therapist can now move a patient from clinical treatment to a structured, clinically validated activity programme in a single step at the end of an appointment.
Today’s clinical treatment shapes tomorrow’s health
Sláintecare aims to provide the right care in the right place at the right time, while supporting people to stay healthy, active and independent in their homes and communities. Pain and injury are common reasons people disengage from physical activity, and the period immediately after physiotherapy or occupational therapy treatment can be an important opportunity for re-engagement to happen. Until now, that handover has often depended on informal advice and signposting. This pathway builds the next step directly into the clinical workflow therapists already use.
For the HSE which, based on demographics and population growth, is facing significant projected increases in future health service demands, this step is far-reaching. Each referral by a clinician or therapist to Get Active is a small, practical step enabling prevention to become not just a strategic aim but a key part of everyday care.
Sarah O’Brien, HSE National Lead Healthy Eating Active Living, Health and Wellbeing, said: “Making it easy for people to take the next step towards better health is at the heart of the Get Active programme. Regular physical activity has so many benefits for our health. Not just for fitness and heart health, but also improved sleep and mood. This new referral pathway through Salaso means therapists can connect patients directly with the Get Active programme as part of their care journey. This type of integration is key to putting prevention at the heart of our health service and making every contact count.”
Aoife Ni Mhuiri, Salaso CEO and Founder, said, “We are delighted to be supporting the HSE in its mission to increase people’s activity levels and wellbeing. By connecting Salaso’s digital platform directly to the Get Active programme, we are giving therapists a simple way to extend a patient’s care beyond the clinic or hospital visit, helping them build sustainable activity habits once their treatment ends. This supports integrated, patient-centred care, seamlessly connecting the care journey from clinical treatment through to long-term prevention and well-being.”
